Story

First Grade Firefighter Donald J. Matheson

Kingston Fire & Rescue

First Grade Firefighter Donald J. Matheson died from a work-related illness on May 26, 2021. He joined the fire service in 1971.

Family Memories:

Don was a proud firefighter with Kingston Fire and Rescue for 27 years. His interest in firefighting began as a volunteer firefighter at Dupont while working as a machine operator. When the opportunity arose to join the Kingston Fire Department in their trainee program, he jumped at the chance and changed the course of his life.

Don always enjoyed the camaraderie of the firehouse. As someone who could talk to anyone, anywhere, at any time, he loved working with such a close-knit group of people, as well as interacting with the local community.  Helping people came naturally to him. He had a big heart and was generous with his time whenever he was needed. Don was truly interested in the lives of people he met, and never forgot a name or a face.

After retirement, Don continually found new projects and ventures that kept him interested, and always had the right tool for any job. He was a great storyteller and loved to make people laugh, especially his grandchildren.

Don’s death was the result of a work-related illness. His passing was a huge loss to all who knew him and loved him. He is missed more than words can say.
