Story

Ken (Kenny) was a very proud and well-respected member of the Vancouver Fire Department, retiring as Captain after 29 years of service.

Ken was known as someone who was good at everything - much to his family’s teasing. It was his ability to focus on the task at hand that allowed him to master skills easily. Slo-pitch, rugby, curling, scuba diving, marathon running, woodworking, dancing, most notably yacht racing with lifelong friends.

In his years after retirement, Ken wasn’t ready to put his feet up full time, and worked as a kayaking guide in Tofino, fishing guide in Haida Gwaii and security on cruise ships through the Caribbean.

Ken’s true passion was helping others. Ken spent 15 years supporting BC Guide Dogs as a puppy raiser, where he not only trained dogs, but oversaw the birth of over 30 puppies – one even in the back of his pickup truck. Ken also became an avid (obsessed) archer with the Langley Rod and Gun Club, where he managed the Archery program, building an outdoor archery course and starting a children’s program.

Ken passed away peacefully with his daughter, son and love of his life, his dog Evelyn, by his side.

Ken left us too early and is dearly missed.
