ASSISTANT CHIEF FORREST OWENS - CENTRAL SAANICH FIRE DEPARTMENT, BC
Assistant Chief Forrest Owens died as a result of complications from occupational cancer on July 21, 2022. He joined the fire service in 1986.
Family Memories:
Forrest joined the Central Saanich Fire Department in 1986 and served more than 35 years as a volunteer firefighter, captain, and assistant chief. Forrest was a leader, advocating for mental health awareness for emergency responders, training other firefighters, and leading the community’s fire prevention and inspection program for many years. Forrest started his career in construction as a Red Seal Carpenter. Later he worked in municipal public works. After retiring from his career position in the fire department in 2018, he continued as an active on-call assistant chief.
Adored by many Forrest was known for his helping hand and involvement in many community activities. He was a dedicated hockey and lacrosse coach to countless youth in the community, and he served as a member on several boards and committees. Forrest loved hunting and was an avid fisherman, enjoying many hours out on the water.
Forrest was respected by many as a mentor and leader, cherished as a kind, generous, happy, and witty individual, touching the lives of many. Forrest was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend, neighbour, and colleague. He will live on in our hearts, memories, and stories forever.
Gone to soon, his death was the result of a work-related illness.
