Family Memories
Phil was a very well respected and admired Firefighter. He was a very proud member of the Moncton Fire Department with 35 years of service. He was the kind of man that everyone wanted to work with because they knew that he would always have their backs. He took great pride in everything he did, and he was always the first person to step in if help was needed. Phil will always be remembered for his loyalty, humbleness, kindness and generosity. He loved his family and friends like no other.
Phil was also undoubtedly one of the finest athletes hailing from the Maritimes. He excelled in hockey, baseball and softball. He was recognized and honoured many times over the years for his sports achievements and his sportsman like conduct. To name a few, he is a charter member of the Moncton Sports Wall of Fame, the NB Sports Hall of Fame as an all-around athlete, the Maritime Sport Hall of Fame (Baseball and Hockey), the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame after he played for Team Canada in the 1967 Pan-American games. While still in High School he was invited and played in Boston Bruin pre-season games. He scored five goals in one single game but he was not ready to leave his home town despite the offers.
After his retirement Phil power walked the streets and trails of Moncton daily even in spite of the weather. He was a local hero for many. In his obituary he made sure I would not go on too much about his sporting accomplishments. In his own words...” I played for many championship teams over the years but the team I enjoyed the most was the Moncton Fire Department Local 999”. He must have known what he was doing all those years ago when he decided to stay at home and join the Fire Department.
