Story

Volunteer Firefighter John Winfield - Wildwood & District Volunteer Fire Department, AB

Volunteer John Winfield died on June 8, 2023, from a work-related illness. He joined the Department in 1987.

Family Memories:

John joined the Fire Department in Wildwood when he was 23 years old. His strong sense of community and helping others was a crucial part of this decision. Later, John would encourage his wife and then his son to join the department as well. He was proud of his family and the commitment they made. He served on the department for 29 years until he retired in 2016.

He worked as a long-haul trucker for most of his working life. John was a friendly person, and always talked to everyone he met. He would help those who needed it whenever he could, often going above and beyond to give help. John was also passionate about sports and enjoyed baseball, hockey, curling and golf. He umped softball for many years and struck a “home run” when he met his wife at a tournament.

In May of 2023, John was informed that he had a serious lung condition. It was determined that his many years on the fire department contributed to his disease. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, sister, and many other family and friends.
