Story

Captain Floyd Arthur Talbot - Port Hope Fire Department, Ontario

Fire Captain Floyd Arthur Talbot died from a work-related illness on November 23, 2001.  He joined the fire service in 1964.

Captain Floyd Talbot joined the Port Hope Volunteer Fire Department after a major fire at a canning factory which highlighted a shortage of firefighters in town.  Floyd joined the Fire Department in 1964 and retired after 30 years of service. He enjoyed family time with his wife Thelma, and three boys Doug, Dave and Ken and seven grandchildren.  Time was spent camping, fishing, hunting and snowmobiling.  After his retirement, Floyd and Thelma bought their acre in the country. They also traveled to the UK where Floyd was fortunate to visit the family castle in Ireland.

Floyd owed a hardware store in Port Hope with his brother. Whether part of his work or his role on the Fire Department, Floyd could always be depended on to lend a hand when needed. Two key things he believed was that “it was better to wear out, than rust out” and if he helped more people than helped him, the world was a better place.

Floyd made lots of friends on the Fire Department and enjoyed the comradery of the Fire Service.  He was very brave and would never expect his crew to do anything he was not prepared to do himself. Floyd’s early death at 71 was a result of a work-related cancer.  He has been greatly missed by family and friends.
