Story
Fire Chief Harold Scratch Essex Fire Department Essex On
Harold Scratch became a member of the Town of Essex Fire department in 1954 after serving four years as a volunteer firefighter on the Gosfield North Twp Fire Department under Chief Clinton Scratch - his father. Harold moved to Essex when he married his wife Jane. Harold worked for thirty one years for General Motors, while serving his community with the department advancing to the rank of Chief in 1978.
On Valentine’s Day 1980 a vehicle hit a gas meter, resulting in an explosion that rocked the whole town, devastating the main street and destroying businesses and many properties with only a few injuries. Chief Scratch assumed command of the many responding departments and community volunteers. He worked closely with the fire marshal’s office and other agencies for many days during the lengthy investigations.
Harold attended Ontario Fire College and Ontario Police College receiving certificates that enhanced his knowledge and assisting him with his duties within the department.
Harold and Jane moved out of Essex in 1990, and he retired from the Essex Fire Department after 36 years.
Harold and Jane besides raising their three daughters, received recognition from the Ontario Government and the Children’s Aid Society as extraordinary foster parents, taking children that would have gone to institutions because of their circumstances. The differences the family made for these children was immeasurable with many reaching out in later years to express thanks on how their lives were changed. One foster child still is a vital part of the family. Jane and Harold were proud of the love and guidance they provided these children and how it helped them change their lives for the better.
