Story
Platoon Chief George Popowich
Sudbury Fire Department, On.
Platoon Chief George Popowich died of a work-related illness on June 14/2023. He joined the fire service in 1965.
George “Popeye” Popowich was a proud member of the Sudbury Fire Department for 31 years. A tireless advocate of health & safety as well as union rights with the intention of always ensuring the best interests of firefighters. A father with strong family values who put the well-being and happiness of his family above all else. He was loving, supportive, and dependable, serving as a role model for his children and grandchildren.
The retirement chapter of his life was spent with his wife Gayle, building their dream home on Manitoulin Island. His sense of involvement was not lost in retirement though; he quickly led the senior citizen club and was active with the local church. A self-taught handyman, he was routinely looked upon by friends and neighbors to assist with anything from little fixes up to large scale renovations. Never too busy to lend a hand, he took great pride in his work.
His passing has left a tremendous void that’s deeply felt by family and friends. Cherished memories, shared moments of laughter and love flood the minds of those left behind. Our hearts ache with a longing for his presence. Missed dearly in our day-to-day lives as well as at family gatherings where his voice and laughter would fill the room. His legacy lives on in the stories shared, and the permanent imprint of his love left behind.
