Story

John, or Herb as he was known to many of his brothers, followed the footsteps of his father, and joined the Belleville Fire Department on April 6th, 1987. John was passionate about every aspect of the job. During his 26-year career he served on the committees for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Negotiations, Grievances and Budget. Most notably he was the chairman of the Belleville Fire Fighters Toy Drive for 15 years.

John served his union as a member of the Executive Board, for all but one year of his career, holding the positions of Secretary, 2nd Vice President, 1st Vice President and President. Before his retirement on April 23rd, 2013, he was the longest serving Executive Board member.

John was recognized by his peers during the 2011 OPFFA Convention by winning the Ed Hothersall Award. John spent his career advocating on behalf of Professional Fire Fighters both active and retired. He served on the Health & Safety committee and even after his retirement, during his illness, he worked to bring the Clean Zone Initiative to Belleville. In 2020 the Belleville Fire Department dedicated their first Clean Cab truck Ariel 726 to John.

John loved to cook which was always a boon for those on his shift. Hunting, fishing, golfing and cheering on the Leafs were a few of his favourite things.

Forever loved by his wife, daughter, son in law, grandchildren, family and friends.
