Story

FR01 Firefighter James "Jim" Ballard passed March 31, 2023, from a job-related illness. Jim started with the National Defence Fire Service in Petawawa February 4, 1980, and completed 27 years of service. Jim also volunteered as a firefighter with the former Petawawa Village Fire Dept in the late seventies' early eighties.

He was a mentor and good friend to his co-workers and a proud member of the fire service at Garrison Petawawa. He was a quiet personality that gave him an alibi from his countless pranks he played on co-workers. The pranks he played are still talked about to this day. When the fire hall bell rang Jim was all business being a leader to many answering the call and helped with major fire incidents such as the wildfire that threatened Algonquin Park and surrounding communities in 1999. Jim was instrumental in stopping the out-of-control wildfire which made national news.

He contributed to volunteering his time at events such as the fire dept charity hockey tournaments, fire dept golf days, and the firefighter combat challenge events to name a few. On his off time, he managed a cleaning business which kept him busy and in his spare time he enjoyed working in the outdoors.

In facing life's challenges, including Jim's final battle with illness, Jim exhibited remarkable bravery and grace. Jim is cherished by his daughter, grandchildren, friends, and family. Jim's wit and sense of humor is missed by many.
