Duncan Gibson
Acting Captain
Story
Duncan Gibson was born on a hot summer day in 1979 to his delighted parents Alita and Blair Gibson, a baby brother for sister Julie. An adorable and empathetic child, Duncan brought immense joy to his family. His early years included swim club, school, volunteering, travel, Blue Jay games and fun with family and friends.
In 2000, Duncan became the (then) youngest new recruit to the Toronto Fire Service. Duncan earned his Ontario Fire College Certificate of Achievement completing fireground operations, specialized and firefighter in the community modules by spring 2002. In 2005, Duncan earned his Honours Bachelor of Science (Psychology and English double major) from the University of Toronto. In June 2007, Duncan achieved a Certificate in Fire Leadership from Dalhousie University. Duncan served his community through the Toronto Fire Service for over 18 years as a firefighter and later Acting Captain.
Duncan met his beloved wife Kate Nowak at Harvest Festival. A great romance followed. Duncan and Kate married in a tremendously fun celebration in June 2010. Together, Duncan and Kate welcomed daughters Willow and Marigold. In his own words, Duncan described being a father to Willow and Marigold, as “the great joy of my life”. Duncan was an incredibly dedicated and active parent - coaching softball, attending school field trips, and supporting Willow and Marigold in every way. Duncan loved Willow and Marigold more than the world. He was so proud of them.
Duncan was diagnosed with occupational cancer that cut his life short at age 40.
Duncan is remembered with deep love by his wife Kate, children Willow and Marigold, mother Alita, sister Julie (George), & sister-in-law Meg (Michael). His loving father Blair “Kiwi” Gibson predeceased Duncan. Duncan was also dearly loved son-in-law of Barbara and Joe Nowak of Wellesley, Ontario. Known as Unkie Dunkie to his nephew Albert and nieces Norah, Isabel and Rose, Duncan was also a cherished part of his extended family in Ontario, British Columbia, New Zealand (including uncle Derek (Barbara) and aunt Wilma, and cousins) and Australia (cousin Jeff Gibson (Michelle).
We remember Duncan as a wonderful son, loving husband, amazing father, world’s best sibling. He was an intelligent, kind and non-judgmental Pearl Jam fan who brought joy, humour and support to his family, many treasured friends, and sisters and brothers with the Toronto Fire Service.
