Steen Laursen
Captain
Story
A respected leader and dedicated firefighter for 30 years, Steen passed away on September 6, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of strength, compassion, and quiet integrity.
Raised in Denmark and Calgary, Steen joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1963 and sailed the world aboard the HMCS St. Laurent, an experience that sparked a lifelong love of the sea, adventure, and commitment to others. He was a devoted husband to Merrilyn, his wife of 57 years, and a supportive, fun-loving father to Paul (Alison) and Jana Vamosi. As “Pops,” he took great pride in his grandchildren—Finn, Iben, and Kaia—always encouraging them to be curious and brave.
In a remarkable turn later in life, Steen discovered at age 50 that he had been adopted. This revelation prompted a deeply personal journey that led him back to Denmark, where he reconnected with his birth parents and embraced his new identity, eventually changing his surname to Laursen—a testament to his courage and openness to change.
In retirement, Steen and Merrilyn made their home on Vancouver Island, where he cycled daily, explored the world further, and gave back through local volunteer work.
His was a life rich in purpose and love. He will be remembered for his steady presence, generous spirit, and the adventure he brought to every chapter of his life.
