Howard Longley
Firefighter
Story
In Loving Memory of Howard Longley
Sept 10, 1945 – December 27, 2024
Howard Longley lived a life defined by service, craftsmanship, and dedication to others. He joined the Sarnia Fire Department on May 29, 1972, after four years as an Industrial Firefighter with Polysar. Alongside his firefighting career, Howard was a skilled auto mechanic and machinist, always ready to build or fix anything for those in need.
Howard played a key role in building the city’s first Rescue Truck and proudly trained countless firefighters on life-saving equipment like the Hurst Jaws of Life. After 27 years with the department, he retired in 1999 to run Longley Enterprises, traveling across southwestern Ontario to maintain fire trucks and firefighting equipment.
A passionate restorer, Howard brought a 1948 Pirsch fire truck back to life, winning awards and sharing it proudly at parades and shows. His work can also be seen in the beautifully restored 1921 fire truck displayed at Sarnia Fire Station #3.
Even at 79 years old, Howard’s hands were never idle. His heart remained committed to fixing, building, and helping others until he bravely lost his battle with prostate cancer on December 27, 2024.
Howard Longley’s legacy is one of skill, heart, and unwavering service. Whether training firefighters, building rescue equipment, saving lives, or simply lending a helping hand, Howard made the world a better, safer place. His spirit will forever burn bright in the hearts of all who knew him.
He will be deeply missed.
