Story
Captain Donald McDonald
Having been raised on a homesteading farm in central Alberta in the 1930s where survival depended on neighbours helping each other, Donald McDonald knew the importance of community.
In the 1950s, as a young married man with a newborn and a home in the burgeoning town of St. Albert, Alberta, Don was among the first to sign up for the volunteer fire department which had just progressed to having a full-time, paid fire chief. For the next 20 years, Don remained a proud, committed volunteer fireman working to keep his community safe until a full-time, paid fire department came to be.
Not only was community important to Don, but commitment was equally important. If you were going to do something, you needed to put your whole heart and self into it which was a trait and value he instilled into his six children – we are forever grateful for his commitment to his family and his community.
