Story

A. James Sharun was a dedicated Primary Care Paramedic/FireFighter. His career started in Bonnyville, Alberta, in November 1998, and went until March 2011 due to a career move. He returned to his longing in January 2015 and retired due to occupational cancer in Leduc, Alberta, on July 29, 2018. James started this career path due to his passion for helping people and continued making a difference through his years of service. He served with his heart while responding to hundreds of emergency calls and continuously putting others before himself.

James was an integral part of the training program for new and experienced firefighters in Bonnyville; teaching courses through the Vermillion Fire School. His instruction and legacy still carries today, as many of the Bonnyville members were trained by James and they are continuing to train the new recruits.

He fought his battle with cancer just as he approached his work life  as a Paramedic/Firefighter - with unbreakable resolve, resilience, and a spirit that inspired everyone around him. Even in his final days, as his strength waned, his courage and love for his family burned brighter than ever. He was not only a hero in uniform but also a beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend and community member.

Today, we not only remember James but we are called to carry forward his legacy. We will let his spirit and bravery guide us, his compassion and kindness shape us, and his dedication and selfless service inspire us.

Rest Easy, James. Your watch is over but your legacy lives on.
