Story

Brian’s 37-year career with the Surrey Fire Department began in 1980 when, at 19 years old, he was hired as a volunteer firefighter. In 1982, he became a professional firefighter—badge number 143 and dedicated himself to a career of service. Over the years, he held roles as a firefighter, lieutenant, captain, training officer, fire prevention officer, and assistant chief. He was passionate about teaching and shared his knowledge in CPR, auto extrication, and hazardous materials response. Brian loved the fire service and considered himself incredibly fortunate to have a job that made him excited to go to work every day.

After retiring in 2017, Brian embraced three incredible years of adventure. However, in 2020, he began experiencing distressing symptoms that led to a devastating diagnosis of Grade IV Glioblastoma. True to his nature, he faced every challenge—treatment, side effects, and setbacks—with unwavering strength and grace. Surrounded by family, Brian passed away after a brave three-and-a-half-year battle.

Though Brian’s life was deeply shaped by his career, he was so much more than a firefighter. He was a devoted husband to Rhonda, a proud and loving father to Chad (Bryn) and Joel (Ujena), and a doting Papa Woz to his beloved granddaughter, Mika. He played hockey for many years before going on to coach his boys with Semiahmoo Minor Hockey, where he made a meaningful impact on those around him. Many cherished memories were made in Osoyoos and San Diego, along with other warm destinations, where Brian found joy in the sunshine and a great margarita. He loved spending time with friends and bringing happiness to those around him.

Brian always focused on making the most out of life and didn't shy away from a little mischief, as long as it aligned with his motto: "safety never takes a vacation."

Brian lived with joy, purpose, and an unshakable dedication to those he loved. He is missed always and loved forever.
