Lieutenant Shackleton suffered a heart attack fighting a fire at the Poppy Fund Yard, Atlantic Ave Toronto August 19, 1940 and died September 9, 1940 at the Toronto Western Hospital. He received full honors: 70 uniformed firefighters and Toronto Firefighters' Assn Silver Band. His great grandson is a Captain in the Oshawa Fire Department.
